Skateboarding Unites  Secondary Link

  • First and foremost, nearly anyone can do it.
  • Secondly, it’s hard, like really hard.
  • Thirdly, it’s a sport that is highly individual, but has a large shared community.
  • Fourth, with it’s ability to bring people from all walks of life together, to work on something hard, together (if desired and able), skateboarding is one of the most powerful tools in my arsenal for bringing people and teams together.

Breaking down the barriers

I have been skateboarding for 30 years! Maybe more, as I’m sure I stole my brother’s boards when I was a young tike.

Over the years I found myself connecting with people from all walks of life. People that were “rich”, “poor”, “nerdy”, and whatever other descriptive word you want to use. I have skated with people of all colors, genders, religions, and economic class. In all of the years, there has been one common thing that united us all, it was a love to skateboard.

Whether it was the rebellious history, the counter-culture way of living, the artwork, the music(s) or a friend that introduced it to you, there was a start somewhere at some point in time that lit a flame for you toward skateboarding. Now, this is something that I am extremely passionate about, so this will end up being part 1 of… not sure how many yet. After all, I used this theme as the basis for my master’s project/thesis. Because skateboarding has been a means to resolve conflicts in some war torn countries, and in local communities that just need some more support and love.

For now, I will leave it with this.

Find something that unites you to others. If you haven’t tried skateboarding yet, I encourage you to do so, for some of the points made on this post (over there), and because it is a unique sport that has a way to bring people together in a way that most sports or hobbies cannot.

For now, skate on, and let that brain create!
